TL;DR Shorts: Roger Magoulas on Generative AI

20th August 2024

This week’s TL;DR Shorts features computer scientist turned data science expert and data strategy consultant Roger Magoulas who is sharing his thoughts on generative artificial intelligence, or generative AI, like OpenAI’s chatGPT.

Roger shares his amazement at how impressive the new generative AI offerings have been of late, with chatGPTs almost continually outdoing themselves in their capabilities. Roger – and his diverse range of colleagues, collaborators and chums – believe that genAI will bed itself into research as a great assistive tool, much like the level of an intern. What he means by this is that a lot of the foundational work can be achieved by these tools, but they still require scaffolding to do the job well, support to best understand the problem being tackled, and people with more expertise in the area to analyse how they can best utilise the work done by these models. The game-changer with genAI however is the speed at which this work can be carried out.

Roger believes that genAI won’t replace the requirement of people in research, but he is excited to see developments in this space and the adoption of technologies by so many people within research and beyond. He feels that chatGPTs offer valuable inputs in terms of how we can consume and share knowledge in the written form.
