TL;DR Shorts: Esther Dyson on the Future of Research

25th June 2024

This episode of TL;DR Shorts features Esther Dyson sharing her thoughts on the future of research. Esther makes a compelling and convincing case for researchers and innovators to intelligently examine existing knowledge to see what else could be implemented from research that may have been overlooked in favour of creating new knowledge.

Esther is the Founder of Wellville, a 10-year project to improve health care, a longtime tech analyst and investor, and an expert in health and technology. Wellville is on a mission to improve community health outcomes and foster long-term wellness by innovating at the intersection of health, technology, and community development. To achieve that, Esther acknowledges the need for scientific curiosity to drive progress in research.

However, Esther also reminds us that there is a wealth of research information out there that is yet to be fully explored. Research information is being published at an ever-increasing rate. Hidden within the existing corpus of knowledge, there may be many potential nuggets of future innovation that haven’t yet been sufficiently probed to determine whether or not they can be translated from research into reality. Esther believes that, even if we halted all novel research activity today, we could still solve many of the challenges we face simply by implementing existing solutions from research that has already been conducted. Esther’s hope for the future of research is that we as a community intelligently turn more research into reality.
