This week’s TL;DR Tuesday TL;DR Shorts episode takes us back to Dr Ernest Mwebaze, Executive Director of Sunbird AI. Dr Mwebaze shares his thoughts about the balance between being experimental in developing AI-enabled tools and being responsible.
Ernest works at Sunbird AI who are using AI-enabled technology to achieve positive social impact across Africa by helping social initiatives, public institutions and policymakers develop new systems and technologies for a range of applications.
Ernest says that, while there is more data out there than ever before to train models on, can we trust people to use that data fairly? Can we trust the algorithms to be fair? Ernest acknowledges that there is a trade-off to be made in achieving the correct balance between the potential gains of new responsible technological solutions and not stifling the community in developing those new solutions. The key to innovating safely and fairly could be community-consulted regulations with continued engagement across all segments of developers and users.
