The report is a culmination of previous research undertaken related to SARS-CoV, a virus similar in genomic sequence to 2019-nCoV. Remdesivir is recommended as a potential treatment to contain the virus and several others are suggested as alternative options. The recommendations laid out in the report, combined with research and reports from other scientists, have already been taken into consideration by scientists in Wuhan City in the Hubei Province of China where the outbreak originated.
Professor Liu felt a responsibility to share the recommendations in the report to combat this coronavirus as quickly as possible. “I feel the urgency right now to help as I have a Chinese origin and family members in the epicenter in Wuhan,” said Professor Liu. “As researchers, our primary ambition is to help human society right now.”
