Digital Science Webinar: Perspectives on Research Impact

Laura Wheeler, Community Manager at Digital Science, will be hosting our first webinar of the year on “Perspectives on Research Impact”.

The webinar will be taking place on Monday 4th April at 4pm BST / 11am ET.

The speakers:

Jonathan Adams, Chief Scientist, Digital Science 

Jonathan joined Digital Science as Chief Scientist in October 2013. Previously, he was the lead founder of Evidence Ltd (2000-2009) and Director of Research Evaluation for Thomson Reuters (2009-2013). Evidence developed products and services providing decision support to research managers and carried out research evaluation for agencies and institutions in the UK, elsewhere in Europe, Brazil, Australia, China, India, Singapore and Malaysia.

Jonathan has worked at King’s College London (1979-1980), University of Newcastle upon Tyne (1980-1983), University of Leeds (1983-1989) and Imperial College London (1989-1992). He was a science policy advisor to the UK Advisory Board for the Research Councils (1989-1992) and was Leeds University’s Director of Research Strategy (1993-1997). He has published over 100 articles in journals, a series of widely quoted reports on research in the BRIC economies and regularly presents at international research conferences.

Steven Hill, Head of Research Policy, HEFCE

Steven Hill is Head of Research Policy at the Higher Education Funding Council for England. Prior to joining HEFCE Steven was Head of the Strategy Unit at Research Councils UK, covering a range of research policy issues, and had several roles in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, working on evidence-based policy making. Earlier in his career Steven was a university lecturer at the University of Oxford where his research focussed on plant physiology and biotechnology.

Saba Hinrichs, Senior Research Fellow, Policy Institute at King’s College London

Dr Saba Hinrichs-Krapels is a Senior Research Fellow at the Policy Institute at King’s College London. Her background is in Engineering and Health Policy and her interests are in advancing health research and delivery systems, and the need to engage with policymakers to bring evidence, ideas, and innovation into practice for this purpose. She holds a PhD in Engineering Design from the University of Cambridge, and is a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Saba recently worked on the study that analysed the 6,695 non-redacted impact case studies submitted to REF 2014, a project commissioned by the Higher Education Funding Council for England; as well as a study on the characteristics of high performing research units. Before joining King’s she spent three years working at RAND Europe, had previously worked for the medical device industry in the UK, and continues her involvement in equipment donation and management in the charity sector.

Bokani leads impact analysis and reporting services.She has delivered several training programmes on impact from stakeholder mapping to strategic workshops, and the creation of bespoke impact handbooks for research organisations, such as The Pirbright Institute. She also supports the development of the impact agenda by contributing to consultations by HEFCE, the International Integrated Reporting Council, and, in the third sector, Inspiring Impact. Bokani delivered several 4* REF2014 case studies as well as providing social impact reports for social enterprises using the Social Return on Investment methodology. Vertigo Ventures works with world-class organisations providing cutting-edge impact capture product, VV-Impact Tracker, and consultancy services.
