IOP Publishing Extends Altmetric Integration To Deliver Real-time Attention Data for Books

IOP Publishing today announced the extension of its Altmetric integration, to provide the latest insights on the attention surrounding book titles to authors, readers, and internal teams. As part of the extension, IOP Publishing will:

  • Display Altmetric Badges for Books across all book titles, providing authors and readers with up-to-the-minute insights on where books are being reviewed, shared and discussed online.
  • Offer Altmetric Explorer access to all internal staff, enabling them to browse, filter and report on the online attention for over ten million research outputs. This will also include access to the Altmetric Book Index, which reports on the attention for books hosted on the publisher platform, as well as across Google Books and Amazon.

Access to the data, which is captured and updated in real-time, will enable authors, readers, and editors to see where books are being reviewed, included in syllabi, or mentioned in the mainstream and social media. Shares of the Amazon and Google Plus records of books will also be incorporated, providing a unique record of the social engagement surrounding each title.

Speaking about the new integration, Jamie Hutchins, publishing director at IOP Publishing said,  “We’ve had Altmetric badges on our journal articles since November 2016 and believe that they add a valuable service to our authors, editors and readers. The extension to our ebooks programme is an exciting proposition which helps us fulfil the vision behind a digital-first concept. Alongside the extensive usage reporting that we provide to our authors and customers already, this service helps to provide a broader view of how academic outputs are discussed and used around the world.”

Altmetric’s CEO Kathy Christian adds, “We’re really pleased to be working with IOP Publishing to deliver this service to their authors, readers and internal teams. This data will help them to better demonstrate the reach and value of their ebooks, and enable editors to track trends, identify potential reviewers and support commissioning decisions.”

The Altmetric Badges for Books are live on IOP Publishing book pages now.
