Inputs, Outputs and Emergent Properties: The New Scientometrics #ReCon_17
Last Friday, I had the honour of speaking at the Edinburgh Research Conference (#ReCon_17). The event has been running for a few years now and is a favourite of mine, being run as it is by tireless entrepreneur, and early career researcher advocate Jo Young (@joysci); and open science Twitter celebrity and T-shirt wearer, Graham @McDawg Steel.
ReCon attracts a fairly diverse crowd of researchers, librarians, publishing technologists and entrepreneurs and this year was no different. As well as me, Altmetric Product development manager Jean Liu was there as part of a panel on research engagement, which she shared with representatives from Crossref, Frontiers and Charlie Rapple (@charlierapple) of Kudos.
In my talk, aimed primarily at the postdocs and PhD students in the room, I gaveĀ a 20 minute overview of how the field of scientometrics is evolving and the surprising ways in which it might affect researchers, particularly those at the earlier stages of their career.
