Laura Wheeler, Community Manager at Digital Science will be hosting our fourth webinar, “How to better facilitate scholarly collaboration.”

We’re incredibly excited to begin the webinar with Professor Sir Chris Llewellyn Smith FRS, Director of Energy Research Oxford University and President SESAME Council, who will discuss international scientific collaboration and competition among countries in the 21st century. His in-depth research and knowledge on the subject will provide a unique context on why collaboration is growing, the future of collaboration, and why libraries, societies and publishers are looking to better facilitate collaboration.  

Helen Josephine, Head Librarian at the Terman Engineering Library at Stanford will then describe how Stanford is facilitating collaboration – discussing how new cloud-based platforms are creating new opportunities for libraries, departments and society publishers to more effectively support their researchers, students and authors. 

Dawn Melley, Director of Editorial Services for IEEE Periodicals, will discuss their desire to bring together authors, publishers, IEEE members and other technical professionals who have similar interests. They are doing this with the launch of their new professional networking and collaboration platform – IEEE Collabratec™.

Overleaf – a cloud-based scientific authoring and collaboration tool – has been integrated into IEEE Collabratec and is just one example of this new breed of collaboration platform. In this webinar we will hear from Dr John Hammersley, Co-founder of Overleaf, who will discuss how the creativity of libraries, faculty and societies alike is helping users get more efficient and productive.

• Professor Sir Chris Llewellyn Smith FRS

Chris Llewellyn Smith is Director of Energy Research, Oxford University, and President of the Council of the Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME). He has chaired the Council of ITER, directed the UK’s fusion programme, and served as Provost and President of University College London and Director General of CERN (1994-1998, when the Large Hadron Collider was approved and construction started). He has written and spoken widely on science funding, international scientific collaboration and energy issues, and served on numerous advisory bodies. His scientific contributions to theoretical high energy physics and leadership have been recognised by awards and honours world-wide.

• Dr John Hammersley, Co-founder of Overleaf

John Hammersley has always been fascinated by technology, science, space and exploration. After completing a PhD in Mathematical Physics at Durham University in England in 2008, he went on to help design and build the world’s first driverless taxi system now operating at London’s Heathrow Airport. An amazing and pioneering project, it’s recommended to try the ‘pods’ at least once when flying through Heathrow’s Terminal 5.

• Helen Josephine, Head Librarian at the Terman Engineering Library

Helen is the Head Librarian at the Terman Engineering Library at Stanford University. In this role she is the subject liaison to the faculty and students in the School of Engineering departments of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Electrical Engineering, and Management Science and Engineering. She also offers workshops and consultation to all students and faculty on campus on citation management tools and research databases. She is the Stanford University Library “champion” for the campus-wide adoption of Mendeley Institutional Edition and Overleaf. Helen is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) from the Project Management Institute and received her Master in Library Science from the University of California, Berkeley.

• Dawn Melley, Director of Editorial Services for IEEE Periodicals

 Dawn oversees and manages the editorial direction of publications produced by the IEEE Transactions/Journals and Magazines departments. She works to ensure the quality and timeliness of titles within her areas of responsibility. Prior to joining the IEEE in 2000, Dawn held editorial management positions at such corporations as Reed Elsevier Inc., the Research Institute of America Group (a Thomson corporation), and Warren, Gorham & Lamont. In addition to editorial management responsibilities, her publishing career also includes experience in managing data conversion and electronic product development, developing and directing quality assurance programs and user training, and overseeing database development and the implementation of SGML- and XML-based editing systems. Dawn is co-chair of the Journals Committee of the Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division of the Association of American Publishers.

Mary Anne will then wrap up and open up to an audience Q&A. Attendees will be able to submit questions within the webinar or on Twitter via the #DSwebinar hashtag.
