Bridging policy and practice in data sharing

An investigation into what’s driving successful data sharing in repositories

The State of Open Data is an annual collaboration between Digital Science, Figshare and Springer Nature. Now in its ninth year, the survey and report series is the longest running longitudinal analysis of researchers’ attitudes towards and experiences of open data. The 2023 whitepaper can be found here.

In November 2024, we will be releasing a special report that takes an in depth look into what is driving good data sharing practices globally.

While there has been notable progress in global attitudes towards open data during the last nine years, how much of this is translating into good data sharing practices? Are different regions or funders outperforming others when it comes to open data?

Our new report will address these questions and investigate the rates of papers linked to datasets. By comparing policies and digging deeper into the regional approaches to data sharing, we explore practical guidance for great open data practices going forward.

We will be pulling this data from various sources to look at the trends, including the Data Citation Corpus, Dimensions and Springer Nature’s Data Availability Statements.

The data analysis will be undertaken by Mark Hahnel, Figshare’s founder and VP Open Research at Digital Science and Graham Smith, Open Data Programme Manager at Springer Nature.
