In this week’s TL;DR Shorts we are revisiting Roger Magoulas, a computer scientist turned data science expert and data strategy consultant. Roger shares his thoughts on the benefits of a joined-up, systemic approach to research, development and innovation.
Roger says that, while some foundational research needs to be quite reductionist by its very nature, in order to move forward and discover and develop novel solutions to new challenges we need a different, more holistic approach.
Research conducted holistically, that encompasses systems-thinking and includes insights from a diverse range of research disciplines, is required to address the complex challenges we face as a society. By taking into account the interconnectedness and interdependencies within systems, researchers can gain a deeper understanding of how various factors interact and influence outcomes.
By including research from across multiple disciplines, it is possible to more thoroughly examine a range of issues, and analyse the similarities and differences in methodologies, theories, and outcomes to develop the most appropriate innovative solutions. An interdisciplinary, systems-oriented approach can foster collaboration, nurture creativity, and enhance the applicability of research findings in overcoming different challenges, ultimately contributing to more effective and sustainable solutions to real-world challenges.
