This week’s TL;DR Shorts offering comes in the form of a reflection from Roger Magoulas, a computer scientist turned data science expert and data strategy consultant who has advised many tech start-ups in his time. Roger uses the story of The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro to compare the progress that has been made – and must continue to be made – towards a more trusted and accountable culture of research.
Roger uses the fantasy novel to showcase how, by being open to learning about each other’s similarities, differences, challenges and solutions, we can build trust, understanding and a sense of accountability, and the broad demographics that make up the research community are no different in this quest.
It is only by breaking down barriers between silos of knowledge and building bridges between segments of the profession that we can progress towards a more innovative, more impactful, trusted and accountable research future for all. And, though we have come a long way, we are all still on this journey, so now more than ever we must listen to each other as each actor and every group within the research community has so much to learn and share. If you’d like to hear more from Roger, look out for his podcast, “dataish”, coming soon!
