Open access (OA) journal publications have witnessed a dramatic rise among research institutions and universities globally. Whilst this is trend rings true in South East Asian (SEA) countries, there are differences in the tendencies and directions in the way the research entities are using OA. A key factor is the perspectives among research communities and the other is the practice in using OA in achieving certain objectives. This talk will highlight the trends in various SEA nations and discuss the differences observed among these countries. Comparison made with the top research active countries in the world shows that there are distinct differences in the outcome on using OA. One of the possible cause is in the practice in the use of OA and the selection of topics for research performed in SEA
