Duke University Selects Altmetric to Monitor Broader Impact of Research

By Alex Jackson June 8, 2015

Altmetric for Institutions provides an overall picture of online attention, and facilitates reporting on the outcomes of specific projects or multi-disciplinary research teams

8 June – London, UK and Durham, NC – Duke University has selected the Altmetric for Institutions platform to offer its faculty and administrators further insight into the online dissemination and engagement surrounding its research. The platform enables members of the Duke community to browse, filter and report on the online mentions of their research, as tracked by Altmetric in non-traditional sources including public policy documents, mainstream and social media, online reference managers, post-publication peer-review forums, and other online forums such as F1000 and Wikipedia. Users will also have access to the full Altmetric database, enabling them to compare the attention surrounding their research with that of peer institutions and colleagues.

Speaking on the implementation of the new platform, Kevin Smith, Director of the Office of Copyright and Scholarly Communication at Duke, said, “We wanted to give our faculty a better understanding of who was saying what about their research, beyond just traditional citations, and hope that they will begin to use this data to support and inform more engagement with the wide variety of users and uses of their research, and to demonstrate the broader impacts of their work”.

The Altmetric for Institutions platform provides summary, departmental and author level reporting, meaning that an overall picture of online attention can be easily identified. The ability to create custom groups means that users are also able to report on the outcomes of specific projects or multi-disciplinary research teams.

Altmetric Founder Euan Adie adds, “We’re really proud to be able to work with Duke to roll out Altmetric data to its faculty via site license access, making it immediately accessible to those who can benefit from it most. We will be offering full support and training throughout the implementation and roll-out, and look forward to working closely with them”.

Implementation is now in progress and expected to be completed in the next few weeks.
